Mapping the Measure of America

I thought that this map illustrated the information in an very user friendly manner.  Also, the amount of information supplied within the map is amazingly immense, and I love the fact that the user is able to change variables.Futhermore, the rest of the site is full of wonderful interactive data representations.

I really thought the use of 3D effects was verry neat in this map.  Overall, I felt that the map was extremely well done and the information portrayed was very intriguing.

Geogamathing

Geogmathing
This design was inspired by my fiance as he continues to claim that his "gills are drying up"..  The concept is intended to bring the beach to your own backyard.  The size is not much larger than the average pool and has the ability to generate waves up to 8 feet for perfect surf all year.  The operator can also choose the size of the wave on days that call for a calm soothing ocean, which may allow for it to become the optimal spot for teaching beginner surfers during peak surf in areas such as California and Hawaii.

Final Project Proposal

For my final project this semester I hope to create an interactive map that illustrates the layout for the East Coast Surfing Championships.  Preferably, I would like to use methods such as 3-d modeling, panning and zooming, rollover effects, multiple layers, scenes, and simple animations in order to portray the area around the 1st Street Jetty in Virginia Beach where the contest is located.  I am going to use the data on the ECSC official website, satellite images, as well as my own personal knowledge from attending previous years in order to create a map as precise as possible. With this being said, I have selected this topic because my fiancé and I have attended this contest multiple times, and the map on the webpage seems very minimal. Furthermore, the audience that this map will be geared towards is ECSC contestants and observers, as well and the general public.  They style that I wish to incorporate with this map will have an overall feel of a tourist map, “cartoony” and eye-catching.

I have already begun brainstorming and planning for my project and have realized that I am taking on a lot.  With the due date on May 14, I know that I have much a head of me.  Timeline wise, I hope to have the brainstorming and data acquisition done within the next week (I’m shooting for April 9th).  Then I plan on giving myself until the weekend of April 20th to have finished the overall basic layout of my map.  Additionally, at this time I will also need to complete any 3-d modeling effects that I wish to include within the completed product. From there, I should have enough time to add effects, troubleshoot, and put the finishing touches on my work.  Moreover, I realize that I may run into many obstacles along the way.  Issues ranging anywhere from stylistic hindrances, to scripting errors, and data acquisition problems may stand in the way of successfully crafting my vision.  It will take hard work, and a great deal of effort on my part, to overcome these difficulties and reach my goal.

A few examples of inspiration:

This map is the provided map on the official ECSC website.  I like the overall feel of the map, but in my opinion it needs quite a bit of work.  It lacks detail, which could be really useful to those who are not familiar with the area when navigating to and from the event.  Also, I hope to provide further information on when specific events happen (the contest is multiple days), additional parking, restaurant options, as well as hotel locations and recreation activities. Furthermore, I really would like to step up the stylistic attributes.

http://www.cavejunctionoregon.com/page%2010.htm

I really love the style and feel of this map.  I know it’s a little elaborate, but this is the character that I would really like to recreate when constructing my final project.  With this being said, I feel that this aspiration may take the most time, and become the most challenging aspect of my overall design.

Wish me Luck….I’m going to need it ;)

The information being conveyed within this map is quite unique and intriguring.  I love the style and overall feel of this map, as it takes the viewer through the historic progrssion of both Walmart and Sam's Club. Furthermore, it also allows the viewer to Zoom In and Out in oder to further view the details of various locations.

I really like the splah screen at the beginning of this map.  It seems to portray everything that is in a well made splash screen, and fits the over "feel" of the map wonderfully.  I only wish that once you began to play the map that it would have an option to go back to the "Main Menu".

About Slavery: Slavery Map

I really liked the effect that were utlized on this map.  I found that many of the subtle details within the composition of this map give it a very intriguing quality.  For example, small animations such as the motion shifts really seem to give an overall eye-catching and professional feel.

Professional Effects

           *Roll-over

A complex button that is animated when rolled over/out or moused over/out.

Ex.       http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx2004/button_effect.htm

 *Hyperlink

Text or a button (or movie clip) that the user can click on that will link them to additional information. This provides the user greater access to more information without cluttering the map with larger amounts of text.

           *Pop- up

This is a window that pops up independently when you click on a button.

Ex.       http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/centered_popup.htm

           *Splash Screens (intro pages)

This is an introductory page that a user sees first before being given an option to continue to, in our case, the map.  Basically they are a tool used to provide more polish and info to the user.  They can be still images, but more often they include animation and audio. They are meant to make a “splash” and grab the audience’s attention.

When the following tools are incorporated into your flash presentation they provide an overall more refined product. It’s these small things that really make a huge difference in the look and feel of your product. Perhaps you’ve looked at a map and asked, “I wonder how they did that?” More than likely they used some or all of the above techniques to give their product a polished, sophisticated and professional quality.

I found that this map offers a wealth of information on the transportation options that are available within Washington D.C. It allows the viewer to pick which routes (metro, bicycle, trails, etc.) they would like to view through the utilization of various layers.

I found this map to be filled with an immense amount of information in regards to United States human geography.  The animation in the begining is very eye catching, and the user interface is rather functional (even though it may be a little difficult to use in some aspects).  I feel that this map is a great example to illustrate the possibilities that can be accomplished when constructing an interactive map.
